There are many different ways of writing a song, and really, there is no right or wrong way to do it, but the key to a great song is that it has some thought behind it. Good lyrics, or lyrics that people can relate to are important, combined with a melody that has a good 'hook', and you're looking at a number 1 !!
If you start writing a song, try and finish it, don't leave it for days because you won't feel the same way emotionally. Your frame of mind can change quickly, so if you stop, and leave it a day or so...you could end up with a song that's disjointed or sounds like 2 people have written it. Keep the words flowing onto the paper, and eventually the right ones will come out.
For me, I prefer to get the music down first, then put the lyrics over the top, but do whatever you feel is right ! Try not to be influenced by other people, and talk from the heart, and you'll be on the right track.
Remember there are only 'so many' chords out there, and inevitably your subconscious will have heard a chord pattern and stored it, then when you come to write a song, you find that it's already been done that way.. But hey, what's to stop you changing the tempo !
Before you write a song, ask yourself "What do I want"? Do you want to be taken seriously, or do you want the songs to be fun, or a joke? There was a band who asked me to audition for them many years ago..They were very serious about their music, and accomplished players too, however, they started singing a song called "Bright Green Washing Machine". Even now it makes me laugh..I couldn't take them seriously..made my excuses and left..
